U.S. State Department Travel Warning for Sudan | Travel Insurance ...

travel.state.govToday, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning regarding the risks of travel in Sudan. All U.S. citizens are encouraged to avoid all travel to the Darfur region of Sudan, as well as the Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan States due to the political situation and ongoing security concerns.

The government of Sudan has taken steps to control the activities of local terrorist groups, but the threat of terrorist activity remains high and the U.S. embassy has implemented enhanced security measures to protect embassy personnel assigned to Sudan. These measures include requiring personal to travel in armored vehicles and to obtain advance permission to travel outside Khartoum. Family members under age 21 of embassy personnel are not allowed to reside in Sudan for their own safety.

U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Sudan should exercise caution at all times and closely monitor local and international news from reliable sources to better understand current conditions. Violence between armed militia groups and Sudanese military forces flares up with little notice. U.S. citizens found in disputed areas without permission from the government of Sudan face the possibility of detention by government forces. In addition, the threat of violent crime, including kidnappings, armed robberies, home invasions and car jacking remains particularly high in the Darfur region of Sudan as the government has limited capacity to deter crime. The ability of the U.S. embassy in Khartoum to respond to emergency situations is limited and depends on the current security situation.

All U.S. citizens who reside in Sudan are advised to maintain safe haven plans as well as plans to evacuate the country on short notice if the security situation worsens.

As always, the U.S. State Department recommends that its citizens traveling abroad enroll in?the?Smart Traveler Enrollment Program?(STEP) to receive important safety and security announcements for their travel itinerary.
