Toddler Friendly House | Toddler Times

house 300x300 Our Toddler Friendly New House When we began looking for our new house, I started with a list of the things I disliked about our current house:

-no linen closet
-no mud room
-only 3 bedrooms

? and the things I loved that I wanted to keep:

-formal dining room
-separate living room and play room
-wood flooring
-screened porch

I spoke on here about wondering ?how much space is too much space?? when we started looking at budget and options.? My husband and I decided that we wanted to buy a house that we could grow into for the next 10-20 years with possibly another baby and eventually teenagers. We looked at 10-15 houses in our price range and each had their positives and negatives. We eventually settled on a good deal: a rental that had been vacant, needed some TLC, but had good bones in a good neighborhood with good public schools.? Here?s the other stuff that led it to be ?the one? when we considered our growing family in this house:

Laundry and Mud Room

Kids are dirty and I see plenty of muddy cleats and boots in my future, so having a drop-zone of a mud room right by the garage was a must-have on my list.

For his swingset, soccer ball kicking, playhouse, and room to run with his pup. We are big fans of children playing outside.

I don't like kids toys and kids mess around me. I know, that's the worst thing a mom can say but I like having separation, so having a place for Harrison's things and then having a place for me to relax in the evening was super important.

A desk in a common area

My husband and I decided a long time ago that our children will never have internet access in their rooms or anywhere they can be private. We simply feel that the best monitoring is done when the kid has no idea when you'll pop out and look over his shoulder next. So sure, Harry...you can check email and Facebook. While I make dinner 5 feet away from you.

2,000 footballers and cheerleaders parade in Dublin ahead of matches

"We're going to rock this Trinity house!" organiser Patrick Steenberger cheered over the tannoy as more than 2,000 American high school footballers and cheerleaders streamed into the quadrangle at Trinity College Dublin last night for an all-American pep rally.

Led by a bagpiper in a blue tartan kilt, a sea of footballers in uniform and bubbly cheerleaders marched to the ear-splitting beat of a bass drum.

They converged in front of the famed Campanile monument to whip up the masses ahead of today's historic clash between nine American and two Canadian high school football teams. It's the first time that these high school football teams have played each other on foreign soil. And even the rainclouds didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the players and their supporters as they paraded from St Stephen's Green.

They are among an estimated 35,000 Americans and Canadians who have been arriving here all week for the event which was organised by the Global Ireland Football Team (GIFT).

The focal point is the sold-out Emerald Isle Classic on Saturday at the Aviva Stadium as part of The Gathering tourism initiative.

Arch rivals Notre Dame University and the US Naval Academy will play the game -- a fixture that dates back to 1927 -- at the start of the American college football season which traditionally takes place on the Labour Day weekend. Not to be outdone by their college counterparts, American high school football teams from Texas to Wisconsin to California will battle it out at Navan's Pairc Tailteann and Dublin's Parnell Park and Donnybrook stadiums today.

Meanwhile, supporters of Notre Dame and Navy will be holding their own pep rallies tonight ahead of tomorrow's 2pm kick-off.

A massive pre-match party will be held for Notre Dame fans at the O2 arena that will be broadcast live on RTE One. Their rivals will also stage a traditional pep rally at St Stephen's Green tonight.

And the party will continue tomorrow with a classic "tailgate party" taking place in Temple Bar from 10am to 1pm. Also tomorrow morning Notre Dame supporters will attend an open-air Mass in Dublin Castle.

Meanwhile, hundreds of US marines and naval crew will be attending the festivities as part of a scheduled stop-over of the USS Fort McHenry which is docked at Dublin Port for the weekend.

Zynga hires former online gambling executive Maytal Ginsburg Olsha

Social Casino Intellegence is reporting that Zynga has hired online gambling firm 888?s former senior vice president of corporate and regulated markets Maytal Ginsburg Olsha.

The hire shows that Zynga is gearing up for real-money social gaming overseas, and perhaps here in the U.S. should the company succeed in changing the legislation that currently forbids it. We recently reported that Zynga is spending a lot of cash on lobbying for real-money gaming. The company spent $75,000 in lobbying fees in the last quarter both in Washington and California, centering around a bill that would let companies offer online poker in the state.

Although real-money gaming is still illegal in the United States because of the?Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, it?s very much a part of U.K. culture. As a result, several companies are starting to double down and create social casino games that allow players to gamble with actual cash.

The news also follows casual game developer Big Fish?s announcement two weeks ago that it is joining with Betable to bring real-money gambling to the United Kingdom with Big Fish Casino, a re-branded version of the social mobile casino game Card Ace: Casino. Prior to that announcement, Gamesys launched the first such app on Facebook with Bingo Friendzy.

Evolution of mustards' spice: Plants developed chemical defense against bugs, specific to where they live

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? There's a reason people don't put gobs of mustard on a hot dog. Mustard plants produce a spicy chemical intended to discourage insects from eating them lest they suffer a bad case of heartburn, and it has essentially the same effect on us.

Now, an interdisciplinary and international group of researchers based at Duke University has figured out why some of those wild mustard plants vary as much as they do in terms of that spice. The variation spells the difference between life and death for the plants in the mountainous Rockies where they live, a place where environmental conditions can change quite significantly over relatively short distances.

The study reported in the August 31 issue of the journal Science is one of very few to successfully follow the genes underlying variation of complex traits in a natural setting back to the evolutionary processes that influenced them.

"We were able to put this story together all the way from the plants in the dirt to the amino acids in the laboratory," said Tom Mitchell-Olds, a professor of biology and member of the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy. "That's where the challenge came in."

Mitchell-Olds' team studies the wild mustard Boechera stricta. Boechera is their organism of choice because its close relationship to the laboratory plant Arabidopsis offers them technical advantages and because the plants live in areas that have been untouched and unchanged for the last 3,000 years.

The researchers first identified a broad region in the plants' genome that was responsible for differences in their chemical defenses, vulnerability to insects and survival and reproduction in nature. "Technically, we had no idea what this would be," Mitchell-Olds said.

Ultimately, they traced those differences back to two amino acid changes in the enzyme controlling the plants' main spicy ingredient. With sophisticated biochemistry, the researchers discovered that this seemingly slight difference alters the spice-building pathway to produce a different defensive chemical -- different in a way that apparently matters quite a lot to insects. When plants carrying the version of that enzyme normally found in Colorado were planted in Montana, they struggled to survive as insects took their toll. When Montana plants were established in Colorado, they too got hammered by bugs.

While the findings may have some agricultural applications, Mitchell-Olds says he is more interested in understanding natural variation and the evolutionary forces that have shaped that variation over thousands of years.

"We've been able to go to places where the environment is intact, where these genotypes have been sitting around for 3,000 years in the place where they evolved in the first place, and do science," Mitchell-Olds said. "This variation we see reflects history. We finally have the tools to find the genes and to understand their influence on physiology and fitness, and that's pretty cool."

US women to play Germany twice on 'victory tour'

CHICAGO (AP) - The U.S. women's soccer team is going to savor its gold medal from the London Olympics a little longer.

The Americans said Thursday they will play two exhibitions against Germany next month as part of their post-Olympic "victory tour." The first game will be Oct. 20 in Bridgeview, Ill., with the second game three days later in East Hartford, Conn. The U.S. is 17-4-4 against the two-time World Cup champions, winning their last three meetings.

The Americans begin their tour Saturday against Costa Rica in Rochester, N.Y., Abby Wambach's hometown. They then host Australia on Sept. 16 in Carson, Calif., and Sept. 19 in Commerce City, Colo.

The U.S. women won their third straight Olympic title in London, beating Japan 2-1 in a rematch of last year's World Cup final.

UPDATE: After all that talk about how the bone chips weren?t hurting Worley?s performance the Phillies just announced that he?s headed to the disabled list and will undergo the surgery within the next 10 days. The lesson? Sometimes when something seems obvious it is, even when the people involved claim it isn?t.

Once the season ends Vance Worley will have surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, but in the meantime the Phillies right-hander is continuing to pitch through the discomfort. And his performance continues to be awful.

Worley failed to make it out of the fifth inning against the Mets last night and has now allowed 18 runs on 39 hits and 10 walks in 24 innings over his last five starts.

Yet afterward Worley insisted that the bone chips in his elbow aren?t to blame for his struggles, telling Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com:

It hasn?t affected me. I?m just not getting pitches where I need to get them. It?s all about pitch location. That?s why I got beat tonight and pulled from the game.?I don?t feel anything at all. I?m just having a tough stretch.

So according to Worley it hasn?t had an impact on his performance, yet his performance has been really bad and the issue will require offseason surgery to fix. That?s a helluva coincidence.

Manager Charlie Manuel also told Salisbury that the team hasn?t considered shutting down Worley:

He tells me he?s fine and the trainers tell me he?s fine. That?s what I have to go by. We have the best doctors, supposedly, in the world. I go on what they tell me. He gets checked regularly. What he tells me, I?ve got to believe him.

Meanwhile, since July 1 he?s started 11 games with a 5.80 ERA and .350 opponents? batting average.

This should be achieved such that there is complete alignment with Castrol masterbrand and product brand guidelines and overall communications strategy, best practices are applied and agency selection and management is efficient and effective.? 2) Regarding Sponsorship: Castrol?s global and Brazil-specific sports and sponsorship assets have been identified as key marketing tools to achievement of the Brazil automotive business? aspirations over the five year period 2013-17. This role will be pivotal in mobilising the time and effort of the larger organisation behind leveraging sponsorship as a marketing tool within the Brazil business to deliver this objective. In particular, this role is responsible for the development and coordination of a complete, integrated consumer and customer strategy and program for the Brazil automotive business for leveraging the FIFA Confederation?s Cup 2013 and FIFA World Cup 2014.
Key accountabilities	Brand Communications: ? Oversee all Brazil creative development and production and manage all Brazil media activity in alignment with Regional and Global brand managers. This includes the development of annual media plans and execution management of all communications activity including social media and consumer/customer loyalty programs in line with agreed brand plans.? ? Develop annual communications plans with Ogilvy Media in conjunction with brand managers. Manage and coordinate the development of all communications planning and buying with Ogilvy Media. ? Manage communications development ? including creative development through production, following the outlined Global creative process. Manage and ensure creative and media tactics meet outlined business objectives. ? Oversee Sponsorship events and promotions, Digital and PR communications programs, ensuring connectivity with overall communication strategy. Oversee development of a strong digital marketing platform ? ensuring programs are innovative, effective and measure against strategic brand objectives.? Sponsorships - General: ? Develop and periodically update a coherent and comprehensive sponsorship strategy for Castrol Brazil?s Automotive business that is aligned to the global sponsorship strategy and caters to the Brazil business? specific needs and its plans as per the 2013-2017 WILG strategy ? In coordination with Consumer Brands, Professional Brands and Trade Marketing managers, as well as Sales and GMU Sponsorship managers, manage the development of annual Brazil sponsorship plan for all Market Space brands, ensuring all sponsorship assets are fully leveraged, costs minimized and value is maximized.? Sponsorships - Specific FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 (FCC) and FIFA World Cup 2014 (FWC):? ? Develop a world-class FCC and FWC 360? integrated sponsorship program for the Brazil business, and manage the implementation of the program with perfection helping drive a step-change in volumes and brand health for the business as per the Brazil WILG 2013-2017 plan. ? Differentiate the master brand from competitors using the platform of football ? Essential Education	? University level education ? Bachelor?s degree; MBA or equivalent business school degree is desirable but not required. ? Tertiary qualifications in marketing or a related discipline are considered essential.
Essential experience and job requirements	? 8+ years experience in Consumer marketing/advertising. FMCG marketing experience preferred. Experience working with sponsorships is highly desirable. Previous Channel Marketing and/or Sales experience would be advantageous.? ? Experience developing sponsorship-based marketing strategies highly desirable. ? Experience in developing customer/ consumer focused interactive digital media strategies highly desirable.? ? "Eden" to get North American release

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The Toronto-based distributor Phase 4 Films has acquired all North American rights to director Megan Griffiths' drama "Eden," Phase 4 announced on Wednesday.

Griffiths and Richard B. Phillips Jr. wrote the screenplay for the project, and Jamie Chung, Beau Bridges and Matt O'Leary are set to star in the film, produced by Colin Harper Plank and Jacob Mosler.

The story follows a Korean-American teenager who is abducted and forced to work as a sex slave in Las Vegas after getting a ride home from a bar in New Mexico. Phase 4 is planning to release the film early in 2013.

"Eden" made its world premiere at the 2012 SXSW Film Conference and Festival, where it won several prizes. It also played at the 2012 Seattle International Film Festival, where Chung won the best actress award.

International sales for the film are being handled by the Los Angeles-based sales company Cinema Management Group (CMG).

CMG has already closed sales in a number of areas including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Middle East, Japan and South Korea.

Link between protein and aggressive, recurring prostate cancer discovered

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? In a study to decipher clues about how prostate cancer cells grow and become more aggressive, Johns Hopkins urologists have found that reduction of a specific protein is correlated with the aggressiveness of prostate cancer, acting as a red flag to indicate an increased risk of cancer recurrence.

Their findings are reported online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Aug. 27, 2012.

The team focused on a gene called SPARCL1, which appears to be critically important for cell migration during prostate development in the embryo and apparently becomes active again during cancer progression.Normally, both benign and malignant prostate cancer cells express high levels of SPARCL1, and reduce these levels when they want to migrate. The team correlated this reduction or "down regulation" of SPARCL1 with aggressiveness of prostate cancer.

"Our findings should allow physicians to not only pinpoint those patients whose cancers are destined to return after surgery, but could also reveal a potential new option for treatment," says Edward Schaeffer, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of urology, oncology and pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Prostate Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic.

In their study, Schaeffer and lead investigator Paula Hurley, Ph.D., also found that SPARCL1 seems to play a role in predicting tumor recurrence in a number of other diseases including bladder, breast, colon, rectum, tongue, lung, skin and ovarian cancers.

The team is now working to decipher the specific mechanism that controls the gene in hopes of

developing a treatment that can reset SPARCL1 to normal levels and potentially prevent a patient's cancer from recurring. Hurley is currently investigating novel genes that are not only prognostic of lethal prostate cancer but also contribute to prostate cancer progression to metastasis.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 240,000 men in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year; the majority are over age 65.The disease is the second leading cause of death among U.S. men. An estimated 28,000 men in the U.S. will die of prostate cancer this year.

"While many of our patients are initially cured with surgery, some inexplicably have their cancers return," says Schaeffer. "We are working to identify patients at higher risk of recurrence and our ultimate goal is to develop new treatments that would prevent the return of the cancer."

Funding for the study was provided by the U.S. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program.Corresponding grant numbers are DOD-W81XWH-10-2-0056 and W81XWH-10-2-0046 PCRP Prostate Cancer Biorepository Network (PCBN).Additional support was provided by the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute YSCA, the Patrick C. Reshuffled Republican convention set to proceed on Tuesday

TAMPA, Fla. -- Republicans will convene their convention on Tuesday, squeezing their canceled Monday programming into the span of three days.

Convention organizers seemed not to forsee any additional delays to the convention, though they said they would continue to monitor an impending hurricane.

The new schedule maintains the primetime schedule, with a lineup of Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie speaking on Tuesday evening, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan on Wednesday, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Mitt Romney on Thursday.

Romney strategist Russ Schriefer wouldn't fully rule out the possibility, though, of adding a Friday session to the convention if inclement conditions force further postponement of convention activities.

"We are planning on Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday," he said. "It's a hypothetical question"

Convention organizers argued that Monday's planned theme -- "We Can Do Better" -- could be weaved into the remaining three days of the convention as it's currently scheduled. Some speeches will be shortened to accommodate for the changes.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus will call the convention to order on Monday, as had been planned, but will shortly thereafter gavel the convention into recess. Organizers called this a "very, very brief session -- probably no more than five minutes," and expressed doubts about whether many, if any, delegates would attend.

The roll call vote to formally nominate Romney for president is scheduled for Tuesday.

Syria activists report 'massacre' by army near Damascus

AMMAN (Reuters) - The bodies of at least 200 people were found in a town close to Damascus on Saturday, according to activists who said most appeared to have been killed by Syrian troops "execution style".

The deaths would bring the toll from an offensive by President Bashar al-Assad's forces on Daraya, a working class Sunni Muslim town on the southwestern edge of Damascus, to 270, according to a tally by opposition activists in the capital.

Abu Kinan, an activist in Daraya, said most of the victims were found in houses and basements of buildings and had been shot by troops conducting house-to-house raids.

Due to restrictions on non-state media, it was impossible to independently verify the accounts.

"In the last hour, 122 bodies were discovered and it appears that two dozen died from sniper fire and the rest were summarily executed by gunshots from close range," Kinan said.

"Assad's army has committed a massacre in Daraya."

The Daraya Coordination Committee activists' group said in a statement that among those found with shots to the head were eight members of the al-Qassaa family: three children, their father and mother and three other relatives.

Their bodies were found in a residential building near Mussab bin Umeir mosque in Daraya, the group said.

Video released by activists showed numerous bodies of young men side-by-side at the Abu Suleiman al-Darani mosque in Daraya, many with what looked like gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

"A massacre," said the voice of the man who appeared to be taking the footage.

"You are seeing the revenge of Assad's forces from the people of Daraya: more than 150 bodies on the floor of this mosque."

Mohammad Hur, another activist in Daraya, said 36 bodies of young men were found in the morning in one building, along with several badly wounded people who could not be transferred to hospitals in the area because the army had occupied them.

"We are in the process of identifying the bodies and documenting how they died. Initial evidence shows that they were mostly shot at close range in the face, neck and head, execution style," Hur said by telephone.

"Female members from at least two families say that soldiers shot their brothers in front of them," he added.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is based in Britain and headed by dissident Rami Abdelrahman, said it had received reports of dozens of bodies found in Daraya, but it had not yet ascertained how they were killed.

The army overran Daraya, one of a series of large, mostly run-down Sunni Muslim towns that surround Damascus, on Saturday after three days of heavy bombardment that killed 70 people, according to opposition sources and residents who said most of the dead were civilians.

The attack on Daraya was part of an army campaign to regain control of the outskirts of the capital, a mixture of built up areas and farmland where rebels had regrouped and relaunched guerrilla attacks on Assad's forces.

Assad belongs to Syria's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that has dominated power in Syria for the last five decades. Members of the country's Sunni majority are at the forefront of the uprising.

Game cam brings out the worst in local wildlife ? Living ? Bangor ...

FORT KENT, Maine ? Living out in the country, as we do here on Rusty Metal Farm, contact with some of the local wildlife is a near daily occurrence.

Sharing the farm with a seemingly endless variety of critters of all shapes and sizes with fur, feathers or scales means that on any given day the odds are in my favor of seeing something intriguing or mysterious enough to send me running to consult one of my nature books or the Internet.

But nowhere in my personal library or from within the depths of Google is there any reference to the animosity that bears hold toward photography.

Certainly, there are cultural and societal references documenting human emotions about being photographed.

In some cultures having one?s photo taken is perceived as having one?s soul stolen.

In others ? largely those populated by celebrities such as Sean Penn ? it?s an invitation to a smackdown.

Now you can add bears to the list of those who prefer to remain off camera.

Earlier this summer a friend and I set up a game camera next to Rusty Metal Pond in an attempt to capture images of a pair of beavers who had moved in and set up house.

Mr. and Mrs. Beaver were in the middle of constructing a pretty impressive lodge and we figured it would be fun to document their progress.

The camera itself is a fairly simple piece of technology running off a set of batteries and a built-in motion detector.

When an animal or bird ? or, as we learned, a bug, leaf or branch ? walks, flies or wafts past, the movement trips the camera?s shutter and a photo is taken. There?s even a flash for low light and night shots.

Patience, my friend told me, is the secret to getting good photos with a game camera. The longer it?s left alone, the better the odds of capturing something interesting.

What we were hoping for, of course, was a National Geographic-quality sequence of photos of our friends the beavers building their home.

What we got was a less-than impressive array of fuzzy night photos in which, if you squint and look at the images from the right angle, there may be a beaver doing something.

There also were several shots of the vegetation in front of the camera and way more photos than I ever needed of me on the riding lawn mower cutting the grass around the pond.

Were the beavers camera shy? Were their lodge-building techniques proprietary in nature and thus no photos allowed?

We may never know, but clearly if we wanted some game shots, a change of venue was in order.

So we reloaded the camera?s memory card and set off to position it on a trail here on the farm known to be frequented by creatures great and small.

And there it sat for more than two months ? out of sight and definitely out of mind until last week when it hit us, ?Wow, maybe we should go check the camera.?

A short hike later brought us to within sight of where we had left it, but it seemed to be missing.

Getting closer, we saw it was not missing, rather the tripod on which it sat had fallen over.

Getting closer still, we then saw it had not so much fallen as it had been smacked over and perhaps even stomped on.

What creature, we asked ourselves, would hold such malice toward an innocent game camera? We could hardly wait to get back home and find out.

The first series of photos showed the north end of a southbound female moose sauntering by either unaware of, or uncaring of the game camera, though now that I look back on it, her expression as she looked over her shoulder toward the lens may have been one of, ?Does this camera make my butt look big??

The next two shots were of a smaller moose at night and then some more of those fuzzy, ?find-the-animal-in-this-picture? shots.

Then ? pay dirt.

Now, we are not sure what happened next, but best as we can figure, bears ? or at least that particular bear ? are not exactly patrons of the visual arts.

The shot immediately after the close up is a sort of action photo as the camera is pushed to the ground.

The next series shows the ground from a profile angle since the camera was on its side with a bear apparently jumping up and down on top of it.

Bears are known for having a keen sense of smell, and my friend and I wondered if perhaps they have pretty good hearing to go with that and perhaps the soft ?clicking? of the camera?s shutter irritated the bruin.

According to the American Bear Association?s website, ?It is believed that black bears hear much better than humans, probably in the ultrasonic range.?
