Eat Pray Love Movie Review

EatPrayLove215px-Eat_pray_love_ver2I really enjoyed reading Eat Pray Love, so I decided to watch the movie. ?I?ll be honest, my husband was less than thrilled with the choice, but he was a good sport and watched it with me.

What We Enjoyed about the Movie

Both of us agreed that our favorite parts of the movie were the scenes in Italy and India. ?In Italy, the gorgeous food filming made us both hungry and ready to fly to Italy tomorrow.

In the India section, there were quite a few humorous moments, and we both liked watching the main character, Liz?s spiritual struggle. ?I also thought that Julia Roberts was a good choice for the lead character, though my husband felt she was a bit too old for the role.

The Bali section was our least favorite part, for reasons I will explain in a minute. ?However, the character of Ketut, who is Liz?s spiritual mentor in Bali, was perfectly cast and lent much needed humor to the film. ?This actor and his comedic timing (along with his toothless smile) was one of my favorite parts of the movie.

What We Didn?t Like about the Movie

Because I read the book first, I was (foolishly) expecting the movie to be true to the story, which it wasn?t. ?The issue of Wayan procrastinating when finding a home wasn?t really mentioned, which I thought was an important part of the book.

The biggest liberty, though, was taken with Liz and Felipe?s relationship. ?It all felt too Hollywood when the film had them break up for awhile and struggle in their relationship. ?Sure, in the book they struggled a bit, but it was nothing like the film, complete with the melodramatic romantic reunion. ?Honestly, this part is what ruined the film for me.

If you have not read Eat Pray Love, you will likely enjoy this film (save the cheesy Hollywood romance reunion). ?However, if you have read the book, you may likely be disappointed by the many inaccuracies in the film.

Have you seen the movie or read the book? ?What did you think?
