? Join Date: Jan 2002 Location: Ohio Posts: 4,717	I believe in "buy American" when it's possible, but it's getting harder and harder to find American made products. I am looking to upgrade my stereo system in my Camaro and I am a member of a Camaro forum. Several guys on the forum have recommended I purchase from Internet companies such as Crutchfield. I mentioned that I always try to support local companies unless it just doesn't make sense to do so. It was like I was taking a foreign language. I will buy a system from a local stereo company and will likely be able to find exactly what I want. Is it that unusual to support local companies in your area? I buy my electronic stuf locally, I have local companies do repairs on stuff, I try to buy fishing equipment and/or tackle from local companies as well. Even if the prices are a little higher I will usually still buy from them. I know that buying online is certainly more convenient and often offers more selection. As with trying to buy American, it's becoming more difficult to find a local company that has what you are looking for but I believe it's worth the effort. Just wondering how much effort others make to buy local. Russ

However, about 12 years ago, I started reading about how many jobs like mine (I'm an IT guy) the big 3 automakers were sending off shore. For that reason, I changed my thinking about autos and started buying foriegn. My thinking is, if the big 3 aren't going to buy American when it comes to what I'm selling, why should I go out of my way to buy American when it comes to what they're selling. Buying on the internet I get zero service, infinite selection, the cheapest price possible, and the best possible advice. BTW: Crutchfield is an interesting example you chose. Their business model is basically to be a premium online/catalog retailer, focusing on service instead of price. So basically they are the "friendly hometown mom and pop shop" on the internet.
